Hillary Clinton praised the Reagans for starting a “national conversation” about HIV/AIDS
today -- a comment that drew backlash from LGBT advocates online who
argued the former president and first lady did not do enough soon enough
to draw attention to the epidemic.
In response, Clinton quickly issued a statement apologizing for her
remarks. “While the Reagans were strong advocates for stem cell research
and finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease, I misspoke about their
record on HIV and AIDS. For that, I’m sorry,” she wrote in a statement
on Twitter.
