Egg Powder, Instant Pounded Yam Flour From IBBU
A hungry man is an angry man, says a popular adage and one can only
imagine what an angry man is capable of doing. There is absolute
need for the world to be food secure. To this end, scientists at Lapai,
Niger State-based Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, IBBU’s
Centre for Applied Sciences & Technology Research: Food Science &
Technology Programme, came up with innovations aimed at preserving
and adding value to agricultural produce. They spoke with Vanguard
Learning at the 6th National Universities Research and Development
Fair held at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka in March. Although
Nigeria produces a lot of food during the farming season, over 50% of
the produce is lost due to lack of proper storage facilities.

The Inconsistencies of Jamb Examinations
At about 40 years of its existence, it had never been recorded that a mark was awarded freely by the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) to any candidate. But the tables had since turned. In its last examination, JAMB awarded 40 marks each to candidates in a
curious fashion. Just like that. With the drama resulting from the poor organisation of the Computer Based Tests (CBT), it is yet another episode of the controversy for JAMB.

A bill for an Act which prescribes five-year jail term for lecturers who indulge in sexual relationship with their students passed First Reading on the floor of the Senate on Wednesday. The only exemption in the bill is where the student is legally married to the lecturer before admission in the school as a student.
While seeking to completely ban any form of sexual relationship between lecturers and their students, the bill provides that students who falsely accuse lecturers of sexual harassment could face dismissal from the school but no jail term was prescribed.

Why Secondary School Leavers Shun Polytechnics
The dichotomy between university and polytechnic graduates calls
for government attention, as it appears to be one of the reasons
many students are not willing to accept admission into Nigerian
polytechnics.
Over the years, students seeking tertiary education always wanted
to attend universities. Few who are in polytechnics or have
graduated from polytechnics did so as a last resort. Stakeholders in
the sector are finding it difficult to persuade prospective students
that university and polytechnic certificates carry the same weight;
but experience shows variance with the claims.
Because of this, there are over one million admission spaces in the
polytechnics and colleges of education, students are not willing to
accept the offers.

Nigerian Breaks 187-Year-Old Record University of London
A Nigerian academic, Professor Abiodun Alao, will today deliver inaugural lecture at King’s College, University of London, making him the first black African scholar to deliver such lecture since the institution was established in 1829.

The Neglect of Polytechnic Education in Nigeria
University education, according to educationists,
is a process of learning designed to produce
graduates with theoretical understanding and
competence in various disciplines, while
polytechnic education places considerable
emphasis on practical training and technological
know-how.
In the light of this, polytechnic education was, in
the main, geared towards delivering sound
technical education, and its courses designed to
be more practical than the theory-oriented
courses offered in universities.
